Little known fact about me: I am 100% completely mad-wild for the work of HR Giger. Crazy about it to the point that I have been cooking up an idea for a game inspired by his work. Why? Because if you LOOK at it you will ask yourself “What the hell kind of society is he depicting and how did they come to be that way?” Maybe it’s just be who asks that, but someone’s got to overthink everything and I am just the (wo)man for the job. That’s a project for a future after Shambles. Until then I content myself by fantasizing that I wake up one day and there’s a huge Amazon box on my doorstep with all of his art books. *Swoon*
In any case, imagine my surprise when I ran across this little gem in a game at Kongregate. There’s at least one more Gigeresque image in the game (good luck with the circuitboard game by the way, when I got there I had to give up playing). I hit the website of the guy who made the game (and other games) and was delighted to find some creepy biomechanoid imagery in his gallery. If you like Giger, do check it out and play this guy’s games. He’s creative!
Why all this hubbub? I am a big fan of games. Mostly casual games, because I am *very bad* at “serious” games. However, I recognize the power of games to convey information and their worth as teaching and learning tools. In addition, it seems that games are an incredible medium for storytelling. With the exception of Dark Seed I have not seen any other of this Giger-type imagery in a game. While it’s not central to the game, it was certainly a pleasure so see that some people are taking that biomechanoid concept and running with it. Cheers to you, Psionic!
As for my own game concept, well it’s not buried in the back of my head any more. At some point when I have a pile of capital and a crack team of hotshot game-designing unknowns (oxymoron?) I’ll unleash my horriffic vision on the world.
